The Bernard family’s ownership of Château Beauchêne in the southern Rhône traces back to 1794, when 18‑year‑old Jacques Bernard was able to buy 0.8 hectare of vines during the French Revolution. His descendants have gradually expanded this holding into roughly 70 hectares across Côtes du Rhône, Côtes du Rhône‑Villages and Châteauneuf‑du‑Pape, split into 15 parcels . Ten‑generation winemaker Michel Bernard shifted the family’s focus fully onto estate wine in 1990, abandoning a successful négociant operation to concentrate on quality; today he and his daughters Estelle and Amandine produce polished, classically styled red and white wines while Michel also serves as president of the Suze‑la‑Rousse University of Wine. The estate holds High Environmental Value (HVE) certification and eschews herbicides, using cover crops, bats and bees to encourage biodiversity, and their 16th‑century château (its name means “beautiful oak”) still bears the crest of the Biliotti family, who built it when Avignon was the papal seat .
