Description
Melitzani's Xinomavro vines are planted in the noted "cru" of Gastra, on a hill of about 200m altitude. Planted in well-drained, calcareous soils, the nearly 50 year old vines are organically farmed. Yields tend to be around 6,000 to 7,000 kg per hectare. The philosophy at Melitzani is to create low intervention wine, specifically accenting the charming and distinct flavors and aromatic profile of the Xinomavro variety. In 2016, fermentation took place in concrete vats, via indigenous yeast, over a two week span, thereafter spending over a year in tank before bottling. Tobacco and leather aromas mingle evenly with the characteristic aroma of ripe tomatoes and red fruit.
